Sports Leadership Youth Program

Watch the inspiring video.

Legend. Literacy. Legacy.

Because accessing ice time can be challenging for some youth, the program starts through the fun and joy of playing ball hockey in the school gym at noon hours or after school, where youth are guided with encouraging lessons from a former NHL superstar. There’s more. As a best-selling author, Bryan knows that along with physical fitness, literacy also contributes to community wellness.

For this reason, the sports leadership program with Bryan Trottier also incorporates an on-going inclusive mentorship program for First Nations students with a special literacy focus -- where students of other backgrounds can be included as a way to develop cultural bridges.

  • Bryan has created an easy-access virtual classroom with short video lessons to share with youth to encourage and inspire them to play ball hockey..

  • With each video, Bryan shares a life lesson as a team player and as a coach, based on his NHL career.

The second leadership component involves inviting older youth in the school or community to run the program. Because of the easy-access virtual classroom, these young leaders share the video before playing ball hockey with a group and supervising the play. They are also given activity sheets to help lead the life-lesson discussions that follow the sport time.

  • In each video lesson in the virtual classroom, Bryan coaches youth on a specific aspect of the game, and then suggests some fun practice drills.

After youth practice and play, they end their ball hockey time by returning to the virtual classroom for a short message from Bryan about life skills, based on stories and insights from his time as an NHL coach.

  • Each virtual classroom consists of an 12-week program.

  • The virtual classroom also has access to hockey stories to encourage reading.

There is also the optional purchase of special Bryan Trottier ball hockey equipment.

Teachers and youth also have access to the second component of the program, where First Nations mentors visit the classroom virtually to share skills and life lessons.
